What’s a raw diamond’s characteristics ?

Unlike cut diamonds, raw diamonds do not follow the 4C’s rule. They are not polished nor cut which confer them a unique and unrivalled shape. Regarding their characteristics, raw diamonds showcase unique qualities that differentiate them from their polished counterparts :

  1.  Raw diamonds exhibit a rough, unpolished appearance with irregular surfaces and natural shapes.

2. Their color can range from translucent to opaque, and they may contain inclusions such as minerals, fractures, or other imperfections that add to their unique character.

3. Due to their natural origin, raw diamonds are often available in a variety of shapes and sizes, with each stone being distinct due to its unique formation process. But, on occasion, we come across raw diamonds that exhibit the shape of a smooth, sharp, clear, and perfect octahedron. They look as if they were cut & Polished but they are perfectly natural.

4. Raw diamonds are valued for their purity and authenticity, reflecting the raw beauty of nature and captivating with their naturally unique appearance.

5. Because of their unaltered state, raw diamonds often retain clues to their geological history, providing a direct link to the natural processes that formed them over time.

Despite their rough appearance, raw diamonds possess the same chemical composition as the polished one, consisting of pure carbon arranged in a crystal lattice structure. This composition is what gives diamonds their remarkable hardness, making them one of the hardest known natural substances.

The majority of natural diamonds originated hundreds of millions of years ago, forming at depths of approximately 200 kilometers. Some diamonds were even created at greater depths, reaching depths of around 800 kilometers. They were formed under extreme pressure and temperature conditions. Then, they are brought to the surface through volcanic eruptions or geological processes, which expose them to the Earth's surface in their raw, unrefined form.

While raw diamonds are typically less expensive than cut diamonds due to their unprocessed nature, they still hold significant value, especially for individuals who appreciate their natural beauty and uniqueness. The price of raw diamonds is influenced by factors such as carat weight, color, clarity, and shape, similar to cut diamonds. For exemple, Octahedron shape raw diamonds are one of the most expensive type of raw diamonds. However, they are often priced lower per carat compared to cut diamonds of equivalent quality.

As a customer there is an important point that you might want to keep in mind : choosing raw diamonds offers the advantage of obtaining a larger carat weight for your investment, as rough diamonds undergo a 50% weight reduction during the polishing process.

It's essential to note that the price of raw diamonds can vary widely depending on their characteristics and market demand. Some collectors and enthusiasts are willing to pay a premium for exceptional raw diamonds with rare colors, large carat weights, or unique shapes. Additionally, the origin and ethical sourcing of raw diamonds can also impact their price, with responsibly mined and ethically sourced diamonds often commanding higher prices due to consumer preferences for sustainable and transparent practices in the diamond industry.
